A handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF) is a portable, non-destructive, rapid elemental analysis instrument that can directly determine the elemental composition and content of solid, powder, and liquid samples on-site. Its principle involves emitting high-energy X-rays from an X-ray tube to excite sample atoms, causing them to release characteristic fluorescence. This fluorescence is then captured and analyzed by a detector to identify the element and its content.
Handheld XRF are widely used in ore exploration, metal recovery/alloy analysis, precious metal identification, soil heavy metal screening, material screening, RoHS compliance screening, and catalyst toxicity analysis.

Can Light Elements in Aluminum Alloys be Tested Using XRF?
Some XRF models can test for light elements such as magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S).
- An XRF with an SDD detector is required for testing.
- Helium purging or a vacuum pump accessory is required to eliminate interference from argon in the air.
