What Units are Used to Measure Tablet Hardness?

There are several commonly used units for tablet hardness. The International Unit (SI) is Newton (N) and kilopascals (kPa). The SCU (SCU) is traditionally used in North America.

Conversion formula:

1 SCU ≈ 1.39 N

kPa = N / surface area (m²)  (This requires the tablet’s compressive area).

Tablet Hardness Tester Operation Guidance

1. Calibration: Calibrate the instrument using standard weights to ensure accurate readings.
2. Place the tablet upright in the center of the test anvil.
3. A high-precision pressure sensor is used to gradually contact the indenter and automatically apply pressure to the tablet.
4. The instrument continuously applies pressure electronically until the tablet breaks, at which point it stops.
