Working Principle of Soxhlet Extractor

The working principle of a Soxhlet extractor can be summarized in the following steps.
1. Loading the sample
The extraction thimble, which is commonly constructed of cellulose or other porous materials, is loaded with the solid sample from which the target compounds are to be extracted.
2. Solvent addition
An appropriate solvent is introduced to the Soxhlet extractor’s boiling flask. The solvent used is determined by the type of chemicals being extracted and their solubility in the solvent.
When the solvent in the boiling flask is heated, it vaporizes and rises into the condenser.
Because of the movement of cold water surrounding the condenser, the solvent vapor cools and condenses. Condensed solvent droplets then return to the extraction thimble.
The extraction thimble’s condensed solvent dissolves the target chemicals from the solid sample, resulting in a solution that is collected in the boiling flask.
The siphon mechanism of the Soxhlet extractor is activated when the solvent level in the boiling flask reaches a specified level. The siphon permits the solvent to return to the boiling flask while the extracted chemicals remain in the extraction thimble.
7. Rinse and repeat
The siphon action rinses the extraction thimble with fresh solvent, and the cycle of heating, condensation, extraction, and siphoning repeats itself for a predetermined number of cycles or until the extraction is finished.
8. Collection of extract
The extracted components’ solvent is collected in the boiling flask and can be further processed or analyzed as needed.
