FAQ

It relies on solvent reflux and siphon circulation. Solid samples are repeatedly exposed to pure hot solvent, delivering higher extraction efficiency. In conventional reflux extraction, solvent concentration keeps decreasing, leading to slower extraction and lower recovery rates.

Common causes:

  • Insufficient heating temperature leading to low solvent evaporation;
  • Overfilled filter paper cartridge blocking the rising vapor path;
  • Air leakage of the device or poor condensation performance;
  • Blockage of the siphon tube by residual solid particles.

The sample level must not exceed the overflow line of the cartridge, and the cartridge top shall be well folded and sealed. If powder sample leaks into the extraction flask, it will cause local overheating and bumping, as well as dissolution of impurities, which interferes with subsequent content measurement.

Stop heating and cool down the device first. Continue distilling to recycle organic solvent until the liquid level is below the siphon tube, then take out the filter paper package. Remaining solvent can be dried in a low-temperature water bath. Open flames must be avoided throughout the whole process to prevent fire caused by volatile organic solvents.

Samples prone to thermal decomposition or swelling/dissolving in organic solvents cannot be used. Main error sources include incomplete extraction, residual solvent, leaked sample powder, thermal degradation of target compounds under excessive temperature, and insufficient siphon cycles.
